What’s Happening in Grade 4 in Term2, 2024

In Literacy students will be:
Reading
In Term 2 students will learn about using maps and how to use them effectively.
Students learn geographical terms and how to use map symbols, keys, and map scales. Students will have multiple opportunities to find specific locations on maps and globes using coordinates. Students also learn about time zones, maps depicting elevation and depression, and the relationship between a three-dimensional globe and flat map. Students will also be introduced to the Early African Kingdoms and about Medieval trading. Students are also introduced to African works of art, including the ritual, ceremonial, or celebratory purposes of many art works.
Writing
In Writing students will continue to work on genre writing. They will be practicing their handwriting skills with the aim to get their pen licence by the end of Term 2. Students will continue to edit for capital letters, spelling, and full stops. This will extend to question marks and exclamation marks. Students will also continue to expand sentences to include, who/what, when, where, why and how to improve their writing.
Spelling
Students will also be continuing their learning of phonics and spelling. They will learn to spell words that contain homophones, words with more than one-syllable and recognise suffix rules. Students will learn to apply the -ing suffix to the start of a sentence.
In Mathematics students will be:
In Term 2, students will continue to begin each lesson with our Daily Review slides which will revisit learning from Term 1.
This term they are looking at dividing multi-digit numbers using a written algorithm with regrouping and beginning to look at equations with remainders. Students will explore how to solve worded addition and subtraction problems using a bar model. They will look at sketching 3D shapes from isometric views of objects made from cubes.
Students will also be learning how to calculate elapsed time for times to the hour and to five minutes. They will learn how to determine finishing and starting times when given the other variant. Students will also learn to measure, compare, and order masses to the nearest gram with the use of scales. They will also explore how to read temperature using a thermometer.
Students will be looking at probability and be able to describe events using the terms, ‘least likely, to most likely’. They will also learn how to justify decisions using the terms ‘equally likely’, ‘unlikely’, ‘likely’, ‘certain’ and ‘impossible’. Students will learn how to classify events as independent and dependent and explain their reasoning.
Towards the end of the term, the Grade 4 students will be applying their prior knowledge of learning the distributive and associative property rules to solve multiplication problems. In the last week of term, they will have a recap of the skills they have learnt during the term.
In Inquiry students will be:
In Inquiry this term, students will further their understanding about the world around them and how other civilisations have progressed to what they are today.
Wellbeing
We will be using the Respectful Relationships program to focus on emotional literacy.
Students will engage in lessons looking at:
- understanding, expressing and managing emotions.
- learning about their personal strengths, including participating in cooperative games and setting goals.
- looking at positive coping strategies and learning about understanding strong emotions.
There will be a continued focus on our SWPBS Expectations as outlined in our whole school matrix.
The Grade 4 teachers are looking forward to another busy term ahead.

SUGGESTED LEARNING TASKS
In addition to supporting your child to complete the Expected Home Learning tasks each week, you may also like to encourage your child to select one or more of the following tasks:
- Complete tasks from the Suggested Home Learning rubric.
- Apply real life Mathematics in situations outside of the classroom (e.g. working out how much change required when shopping, telling the time)
- Help with mealtime preparations (measuring ingredients, reading a recipe, giving instructions…)
- Continue to promote opportunities for a balanced lifestyle with regular face to face social interactions and breaks from technology.
- Read a range of text types for enjoyment (e.g. non- fiction, fiction, newspaper, comics).
