What’s Happening in Grade 2 in Term 3 2024
In Reading and Phonics students will be:
- building students fluency by using reading decodable passages connected to the sounds we have learnt.
- developing student’s abilities to comprehend different types of Fiction and Non-Fiction texts.
- review reading words with silent letters and digraphs/trigraphs.
- learn how to make a reasonable choice for spelling words that include these sounds through identifying different spelling patterns within the English language.
In Core Knowledge students will be:
- continue to build students’ knowledge of Greek Myths through fictional stories.
- Developing students understanding of the Geography of Australia and Connection to country through Non-Fiction texts.
- Students will be exploring and learning about Great Inventions and how they improved our lives today.
- Using maps to explore locations of First Nations people and how they are connected to where students live.
In Writing students will be:
- Exploring pronouns and how to identify and use them correctly in sentences.
- Begin to explore with different punctuation types and understand how they are used effectively.
- Using adverbials at the beginning of their sentence to describe the action that will follow.
- Looking at picture prompts to support students’ ability to be creative with their writing and apply what they have learnt.
In Mathematics students will be:
- Continuing to build students knowledge of telling the time and recognising the difference between digital and analogue time.
- Developing strategies to support solving addition and subtraction problems.
- Applying the knowledge students have learnt about addition and subtraction by using a problem-solving approach.
- Reviewing their understanding on place value and working with numbers to 1000.
- Recognising number patterns and explain how number patterns are used in real life.
- Exploring the connection between multiplication and division.
- Developing their knowledge of mass and how to use both informal and formal units to support measuring.
- Learning about fractions and how to divide and shade fractions of a shape and a collection.
In Inquiry students will be:
- Using a play-based approach to show case what they have learnt within the Core Knowledge units.
Wellbeing
Students will engage in lessons looking at Help Seeking strategies and Positive Gender Relations.
Smiling Minds is a tool that will be used alongside the Respectful Relationships program to further develop skills to support their social and emotional wellbeing.
There will be a continued focus on our SWPBS Expectations as outlined in our whole school matrix.
