What’s Happening in Foundation in Term 2, 2024
Important Dates:

In Literacy students will be:
- explicitly taught the correct articulation and pronunciation of letters and sounds.
- engaging in daily activities that involve manipulating sounds and forming words.
- learning to use their letter sound knowledge to blend sounds together to read words and sentences.
- learning to identify the beginning, middle and end sounds of a word.
- building fluency by reading decodable sentences connected to the sounds they have learnt.
- participating in daily formal handwriting sessions learning how to form letters correctly and how to correctly hold a pencil.
- introduced to the conventions of writing; writing from left to right and leaving spaces between words.
- practising and revising Heart words (high frequency words that need to be learnt automatically).
In Mathematics students will be:
- compare collections using the words ‘more’, ‘less’, ‘same as/equal’ and ‘not the same as/equal.
- counting collections and match them with their numeral (0-10).
- making number stories and number bonds (0-5).
- writing and complete addition equations within 5 using concrete materials.
- writing and complete subtraction equations within 5 using concrete materials.
- counting collections and writing numerals (0-10).
- comparing numbers (0-10).
- participating in a daily review of concepts taught to support them with consolidating the concepts taught.
- exploring length, by directly comparing the length of objects and describing them using the words ‘longer than’, ‘shorter than’ and ‘the same as’
In Inquiry students will be:
- exploring the topic of Kings and Queens.
- identifying and describing royal objects associated with a king or queen,
- describing characters, setting and plots in fiction read-alouds.
- exploring Farms and Farm Animals.
- learning about different types of animals, buildings, tools, and machinery.
- students will be able to make real life connections to their learning.
Wellbeing
We will be using the Respectful Relationships program to focus on emotional literacy.
Students will engage in lessons looking at:
- building a vocabulary to help them recognise and understand strengths and positive qualities in themselves and others.
- the different ways they can control their emotions in various situations, including using calming techniques.
- the best ways to solve problems that may arise in their everyday lives.
There will be a continued focus on our SWPBS Expectations as outlined in our whole school matrix.
Home Learning
– Read the Little Learners Love Literacy book daily.
– Encourage your child to read aloud to assist them with fluency and expression.
– Ask questions about what they are reading to ensure comprehension of the text.
– Play a variety of board games (e.g. snakes and ladders) which involves subitising on a die.
– Use different numbers as the starting point for practising counting (for example, start counting from 6 or 10) or asking your child to count forwards and backwards.
