What’s Happening in Science in Term 3 2025
Foundation:
During Term 3, the students in foundation will learn that living things have basic needs, including food and water. This includes recognising the differences between a living and non-living thing. They will compare the similarities and differences in the survival needs of humans and animals. The students will explore the needs of pets and how they might differ from animals in the wild. We will also recognise why living things need space and shelter.
Grade 1/2:
During Term 3, the students in the Grades 1 and 2 will further develop their understanding that living things grow, change and have offspring similar to themselves. They will identify the key life stages of various animals and how the form it takes, influences what it can do and how it behaves. The students will identify the key features of living things that change over time and those that stay relatively the same. They will also investigate the life stages of living things that do or do not metamorphise.
Grade 3/4:
During Term 3, the student in grades 3 and 4 will further develop their understanding of living things and their life cycles, in particular, those in the plant world. They will observe and describe the life cycle of flowering plants, including the factors that affect growth. The students will develop a greater awareness of a plant’s basic needs, such as light and water. The students will also observe and investigate the parts of flowering plants and examine their function in the process of growth, development and reproduction.
Grade 5/6:
During Term 3, the students in grades 5 and 6 will further develop their understandings about the growth and survival of living things and how they are affected by the physical conditions of their environment. For the most part, we will focus on micro-organisms. We will explore how many micro-organisms help to break down and recycle dead plant and animal material. The students will explore the growth of mould spores and investigate the conditions that encourage mould growth. We will also discuss the function of micro-organisms in medicine and food production.
