What’s Happening in Science in Term 1 2026

Foundation:

In Term 1, our Foundation students will explore how objects move. They will observe and describe human movements and investigate factors that influence movement, such as shape and size. Students will discuss the changes that occur when movement is made and will have opportunities to directly experience push and pull forces, observing the movements these forces create.

Grade 1/2:

In Term 1, Grade 1 and 2 students will explore the topic of light and sound through fun, hands-on learning experiences. They will group different types of light and sound according to their sources and observe how sounds can change in different environments. Students will compare light and sound using relative language, share their ideas, and make connections between these concepts and their everyday lives.

Grade 3/4:

In Term 1, Grade 3 and 4 students will be learning how forces can be exerted by one object on another through direct contact or from a distance. Students will observe the movement of everyday objects and identify how forces are affecting the movement e.g. push and pull. They will learn to identify sequences of events and underlying cause and effect, and identify patterns, such as ‘stronger’ pushes make objects of the same mass move further. During Science lessons, students will explore how the form of an object affects how it responds to different forces, particularly the effect of greater surface areas. They will also develop an understanding that an object that is not moving has balanced forces acting upon it, for example, the pull of gravity is balanced by the push of the surface the object is resting on.

Grade 5/6:

In Term 1, Grade 5 and 6 students will learn about transferring and transforming electricity. They will investigate the forms and functions of batteries, light bulbs, and switches, as well as explore the flow of electrons in a circuit and how it can be altered using insulators or resistant components. Students will have opportunities to work independently, in pairs, and within small groups.
