Mass Lesson 5
Learning Intention:
- We are learning to measure, order and compare objects using familiar metric units (g and kg) of mass and capacity.
- We are learning to recognise the importance of using common units of measurement.
Success Criteria:
- I can estimate and compare which objects will be lighter or heavier.
- I can select and use the units of gram (g) and kilogram (kg) to measure the mass (weight) of objects.
- I can order objects from lightest to heaviest using common units of measurement.

Task:
Today you will need to use your problem solving and reasoning skills to investigate the mass of a locker tub full of counters. You do not have enough counters to fill the locker tub, so you will need to try and investigate how you could get as accurate of an answer as possible. Your answer will most likely be different to others and that is okay.
Please follow the steps below and explain your thinking:
Step 1: Using the ‘Math Investigation’ template, estimate approximately what you believe the mass of the locker tub full of containers will be.
Step 2: Think about the main question –What are the smaller questions you need to answer first to help you try and solve the answer to the main question? E.g. What is the mass of the locker tub? How heavy is a single counter?
Step 3: Use your problem solving skills to try and work out/calculate the mass of the locker tub as if it were full of counters. SHOW ALL OF YOUR WORKING OUT!!!
