What’s Happening in Science in Term 2 2025
Foundation:
During term 2, the foundation students’ main area of focus will be objects are made of observable properties. The student will observe and describe a range of objects in the school and home environments and the materials they are made from. They will use their senses to observe the form and function of various objects made from different materials for a variety of purposes. This will include using informal language to describe colour, size, feel and composition.
Grade 1/2:
During term 2, the students in grades 1 and 2 will focus on different materials can be combined, including by mixing, for a particular purpose. The students will classify mixtures according to different criteria, including the purpose they might serve in their lives. They will explore different substances that form a mixture and whether they can be easily separated after being mixed. These experiences will form the foundation for distinguishing simple mixtures from chemical reactions.
Grade 3/4:
During term 2, the students in grades 3 and 4 will focus on natural and processed materials have a range of physical properties and these properties can influence their use’ The students will conduct tests and look for patterns in the results to inform their choice of using materials for particular purposes. They will investigate the physical properties of materials and their suitability for particular uses. The students will also explore how the decomposition of materials depends on the environmental conditions and their chemical nature.
Grade 5/6:
During term 2, the students in grades 5 and 6 will focus on solids, liquids and gases have different observable properties and behave in different ways. The students will develop criteria for identifying and classifying materials as solids, liquids and gases, based on their observable properties. They will investigate whether the properties of materials change at different times and review how materials change state. The students will also explore the properties of materials and relate them to their use or function.
