What’s Happening in Science in Term 1 2025
Foundation:
In Science this term, the Foundation students will be engaging in the topic ‘On the Move’. In our sessions together, we will develop our understanding of how things move and discover that some movements are voluntary while others are involuntary. We will also explore push and pull forces as ways of making objects slide, bounce and spin. Through hands on investigations and experiments, students will observe and gather evidence about rolling objects and discuss the idea of a fair test.
Grade 1/2:
In Science this term, the Grade 1 and Grade 2 students will be engaging in the topic ‘Push Pull’. In our sessions together, we will develop our understanding of how push and pull forces can affect an object. We will explore how objects change shape or move when force is applied and how gravity and air impacts objects. Following this, we will engage in hands on investigations and experiments, to understand floating and sinking and the impact of water.
Grade 3/4:
In Science this term, the Grade 3 and Grade 4 students will focus on the key understanding that heat can be produced in many ways and can move from one object to another. We will explore many sources of primary heat and how that energy can be passed to what becomes a secondary source of heat. The students will experience heat sources as cold, warm, hot and very hot and measure how the temperature of a material may vary over time. We will explore the cause and effect of heat transfer from one object to another.
Grade 5/6:
In Science this term the Grade 5 and Grade 6 students will focus on the key understanding that light from a source forms shadows and can be absorbed, reflected or refracted. We will examine primary and secondary sources of light, and experiment with light and how it interacts with different materials. The students will describe how light reflects off objects, enabling us to see them and that light travels in straight lines. We will also explore how shadows are formed.
