What’s Happening in Visual Arts in Term 3 2024
FOUNDATION:
This term the Foundation students will be celebrating their 100 Days of school and will be making a cupcake sculpture. During this unit students will use materials such as newspaper, tissue paper, masking tape and paper Magiclay. Students will complete their house weaving collage from last term by adding paper cut outs for their backgrounds. All our students clay work has been double fired and the children will be finishing of their letter tiles with a beaded handle so it can hang somewhere special.
GRADE 1:
This term the grade 1 students will be creating a jungle theme using a recycled paper box. The children will begin drawing a tiger using a directed drawing and then use oil pastels to colour it in. They will look at different types of foliage and look closely at their shapes and colours. The students will draw their own leaves, cut them out and glue them down in and around their box. Students will include pops of colour by adding in flowers and vines.
GRADE 2:
In Term 3, the grade 2 students will complete a lengthy unit on construction. They will be making a crocodile. They will explore areas in construction with a big focus on attachment types. Students will paper mâché their crocodile to make it strong and then use paper Magiclay to sculpt spikes and teeth. Children will paint their crocodiles and use paint pens for the finer details. This will be displayed at the art show.
GRADE 3:
In Term 3 the grade 3 students will be completing a unit on clay. The children will be making a clay monster inspired by the artist James Derusso. Students will be taught a variety of techniques such as pinching, coiling, sculpting and using the score and slip to attach their pieces such as eyes, tongues, legs and other design features. All pieces will be painted with an underglaze and a glaze and then fired twice in the kiln.
GRADE 4:
In Term 3 the grade 4 students will be completing a unit on clay. The children will be making a Japanese Koi fish in a pond. The unit will be broken up into many different steps and will require the students to use their prior learning and new learning together. Students will be taught a variety of techniques such as pinching, coiling, sculpting and using the score and slip to attach their pieces such as eyes, fins and using wooden details for the scales. All pieces will be painted with an underglaze and glaze and then fired twice in the kiln.
GRADE 5/6:
During term 3 the grade 5/6 students will be completing their skateboards which will go over the duration of the term. Students will choose a font style of their choice and sketch it in grey lead until they are ready to colour it in using paint slicks. The children will then explore an artist named VEXX and use his artwork as inspiration. The students will be encouraged to include drawings that relate to their life which will provide a sense of identity within their work. Paint pens will used to add an explosion of colour and the finer details.
