What’s Happening in Visual Arts in Term 2 2024
FOUNDATION:
In Term 2, Foundation students will be introduced to clay. They will create a name wall hanging with a decorative beaded handle. Students will begin by using a rolling pin to roll out a flat slab to then using a wooden tool to trace around a template to make their plaque. Whilst rolling out their clay, they will use lace doilies to print a textured pattern. Children will learn how to make a coil, manipulate it to form the first letter of their name and practice the score, slip and blend technique to attach their letter. The children will paint their clay with underglaze before firing their creations in the kiln. A 2nd glaze and fire will occur to complete the finish product. The students will thread beads onto a wire to create a handle for their artwork. This will develop their eye-hand coordination and fine motor control skills. Students will be encouraged to create a pattern. Students will finish the term making ‘Elmer the Elephant’ using a recycled milk container. They will use coloured tissue paper to create a patch work look.
GRADE 1:
In Term 2, Grade 1 students will begin with threading beads onto a wire and a pipe cleaner to create a handle for their artwork. This will develop their eye-hand coordination and fine motor control skills. Students will be encouraged to create either a pattern or a mixture of beads and colours. Students will then move onto creating a wall hanging where paper weaving will be the focus. The children will choose from a range of paper deigns and texture to motivate creative choice whilst practising words and ideas like over, under, in, out, up and down. Students will complete the term with an Artist study of Piet Mondrian. Children will be inspired by the painting ‘Composition’ which they will recreate by drawing an object of their choice.
GRADE 2:
In Term 2, Grade 2 students will explore weaving using wool to create a concentric circle inside a paper plate. During these lessons they will practise words and ideas like over, under, in, out, up and down as well apply creative problem solving. Students will complete the term with a sunflower drawing inspired by the very famous Van Gogh. The children will have the opportunity to look, touch and smell real life sunflowers to encourage them to look at the finer details and texture. Students will explore colour tone using oil pastels and learning how to draw the shape of the sunflower in a variety of ways to demonstrate different perspectives such as front on, side profile and drooping. Both these art pieces will be displayed at our art show.
GRADE 3:
In Term 2 the Grade 3 students will be inspired by the artist, ‘Grotti Lotti’ to paint an Australian bird onto a canvas. The students will learn about the 3 Golden Rules: Watercolour=watery, always mix your colours and thirdly, layering. With continuous practise the students will develop a strong understanding on how to work with watercolour paint. They will use paint pens to add in the finishing touches. Students will complete the term by exploring weaving using wool to create a house. During these lessons they will practise words and ideas like over, under, in, out, up and down as well apply creative problem solving. Students will use felt and buttons to add in other house features.

GRADE 5/6:
In Term 2 the Grade 5/6 students will be making a clay mug. They be exploring hand building and how to join flat slabs of clay together using the techniques of score, slip and blend. They will be using a variety of wooden tools to sketch designs or use lace doilies even things such as leaves and branches to print textures into their clay. Once the clay is air dry, they will use an underglaze paint to add in the colour. Their mugs will go through a bisque fire, then students will paint on a glaze before the final kiln fire. Students will complete the term exploring a textile unit called dry felting. Students will choose an Australian Landscape to create their 2D inspiration. They will use a felting needle to press the wool fibres into the fibres of the base fabric which will interlock and bind together to help create their image. Both these art pieces will be displayed at our art show.
