What’s happening in Italian in Term 2 2024
FOUNDATION:
During Term 2, Foundation students will continue to be immersed with the Italian language! Students will commence with exploring how to ask and to respond to questions about how they are feeling in Italian using the question Come Stai? (How are you?) Students will be supported with teacher modelled language, use visual cues and listen to songs to learn the responses. Students will then move onto the topic ‘Mia Famiglia’ (My Family) where students will listen to ‘Il Pappagallo’ (The Parrot) which is a story introducing names of family members in Italian. Together with listening to songs and playing games students will learn the names of members in their family. Looking forward to a fun term learning Italian with the Foundation students. GRADE 1:
During Term 2, Grade 1 students will be exploring the topic ‘Succhi di Frutta’ (Fruit Juices). Students will be introduced to the Italian names of fruits. They will use spoken and written Italian to communicate which fruits they like and dislike. Students will participate in a variety of songs, games and other activities to build their confidence in using the key words and phrases. Students will listen to a story about animals ordering juice at a juice bar. They will be encouraged to use strategies such as predicting and using contextual cues to support their comprehension of the story.

During Term 2 in Italian class Grade 3 students will focus on the topic A scuola (At school). They will be exploring the language that is used in the classroom. Students will be encouraged to use this language and practise it with their peers during our class time. Students will learn the names of items they have in their pencil case along with objects in the classroom and be encouraged to use that language when appropriate, for example Posso avere la colla, per favore? (Can I please use the gluestick?) Students will then move onto learning about school life in Italy and explore the similarities and differences there are between attending WPS and primary schools in Italy. GRADE 5/6:
During Term 2 in Italian class Grade 5/6 students will explore the topic ‘Italiani famosi’ (Famous Italians). The focus for this term will be more on the Italian culture and learning about some of Italy’s most famous people. People such as Giuseppe Arcimboldo and Leonardo DaVinci will be explored as a whole class. Students will be given short, written texts about the famous artists in Italian and will use bilingual dictionaries, online translators to decode the meaning of the text. Students will then choose a famous Italian of their choice to research and write a short description using teacher modelled sentences.
