What’s Happening in Visual Arts in Term 2 2024

FOUNDATION:

In Term 1, Foundation students will be introduced to organisational processes in Art. They will become aware of the art room environment and how to work safely with equipment and materials. Students will create a paper sculpture using their imagination to guide their creativity. Through the use of movement, the children will learn about all different types of lines such as vertical, horizontal, zig zag etc then transferring their knowledge onto their fish collage. Students will explore the technique of watercolour resist using oil pastels and watercolour to make an underwater background. Students will complete the term drawing a robot incorporating their understanding of lines, later adding fluorescent colour.

GRADE 1:

In Term 1, Grade 1 students will be developing their knowledge on what warm and cool colours are. They will be using these tones to make a valentines day card then later adding in lines and other details with textas. Students will create a tea light holder out of clay. They’ll learn techniques on how to roll their clay into a smooth sphere and acquire skills on how to make a pinch pot. Students will use wooden tools to add holes and texture to the outer layer. The children will paint their clay with underglaze before firing their creations in the kiln. A 2nd glaze and fire will occur to complete the finish product. Children will practise their fine motor skills by threading beads to make the handle for their tea light holder.

GRADE 2:

In Term 1, Grade two students will be completing a lengthy unit on clay. They will exploring many new techniques such a rolling, pinching, rolling coils and understanding the importance of score, slip and smooth to connect pieces together. Students will be using wooden tools to help cut and provide texture to their pinch pot lion. The children will paint their clay with underglaze before firing their creations in the kiln. A 2nd glaze and fire will occur to complete the finish product.

GRADE 3:

In Term 1 the Grade 3 students will be creating a dragon eye made from plasticine. They will strengthen their sculpting skills such as rolling a sphere, roiling coils, pulling, pinching and use a variety of toils to demonstrate carving details. The children will explore our jelly plates to print a unique background and learning ways to make imprints and texture from materials around our room. They will trace around a photograph of themselves on acetate using fine liners and paint pens. These two pieces will be displayed at our art show.

GRADE 4:

In Term 1 the Grade 4 students will be inspired by the artist Dean Russo to re create his famous dogs. This will be a lengthy unit focusing on skills such as tracing, painting, stencilling and writing. They will explore how to make their work stand out by using contrasting colours when adding in their designs. They will use the letter stencilling to help write their short saying or a quote which will surround the outline of the dog. This piece of work will be displayed at our art show.

GRADE 5/6:

In Term 1 the Grade 5/6 students will be inspired by a watercolour artist named Dawn Tan. Students will be asked to bring in their favourite snack, drink, icy pole, ice-cream, lolly to help inspire their creation. They will be given 3 weeks to work on their sketch focusing on pencil grip whilst sketching, scale and proportion and drawing what they see. The students will learn about the 3 Golden Rules: Watercolour=watery, always mix your colours and layer, layer and layer. With continuous practise the students will develop a strong understanding on how to work with watercolour paint. This piece of work will be displayed at our art show.
